Nextgen Sonic may yet not suck!
« on: April 28, 2006, 08:01:18 pm »
Observe, from some random person's photobucket, the current status on nextgen Sonic. But, what's this...

It has neither generic beetles or spindly nextgen demo grey robots nor retardedly gay Heroes eggbots, but PROPER BADNIKS! and Sonic's ROLLING INTO THEM! It's like Sonic 1 all over again, for real!

Now, let's not get overexcited. This is still being made by Sonic Team, after all. But it at least has a chance!

edit: Sorry bout you guys reading this on the front page. I'll fix that lame BBcode after I move this weekend.

What.

I liked the Egg Pawns to some degree, although they weren't great or anything. However, the next-gen non-Nintendo only crap is persuading me to actually get a PS3/XBOX 360. Neeeeeeeed :(

I just hope those enemies don't have the same glass jaw the original badnicks had. I personally like fighting enemies that "have teeth". (Phrase meaning that they're nasty and tough to destroy for those who don't know what it means.) Maybe this game will be a lot more difficult than the other 3D Sonic games. Shadow was still too easy except for a few certain moments.
Ever know what its like to get pwned by a book? Sonic certainly does.

Shadow has a certain difficulty that is entirely based around the many infinite falls and the slightly awkward control system.  The problem is it's frustrating difficult not fun difficult; hopefully Sonic Next won't suffer from that and will have tough enemies, altough I'm reserving judgement.

Actually no u die plz kthxbai.

You can't help but like them because they're obviously:

-funny looking faces
-stupid (i.e. you can cause one to make the other fall off the cliff in Shadow)
-can't aim right

etc.

Again, I like the actual badniks better because they're cool, but the Egg Pawns have always given me a good laugh. Don't agree? Fine with me, but that's why I like them in a way.

As for douglas saying Shadow's got a "frustrating difficult", in my experience,  once play the game for a long time, everything becomes easier and somewhat less frustrating. (But if you're pulling off a difficult move, I concur that it's really piss-off.)

I like Egg pawns, too. Besides, badniks were childish looking. It's not like they were original anyway. (take a bee, add some metal highlights, call it an ememy. why are we attached to it?) Of course, the crab robots in this game look veery slick and fun. Because of them, the white robots look a little better already.

No Sonic Team bashing please, btw!

I wouldn't say he is rolling into them. Looks like a sliding kick to me, a la modern games kthx.

Not to mention that it is in an urban setting (though it is a pretty scenery), and that is some kind of crazy horde of badniks. And that the grey robots appear in another screen. With a burning city in the background. And in another screen Sonic is wall running. More like ShtH: Sonic edition amirite.

So the only Sonic 1 like thing is that they are badniks. Eh.

EDIT: However I am most pro this:

I was SO going to say that, but I withdrew because... I really can't be sure. I thought it looked like he was glide-kicking Heroes/Shadow style, but I also considered that he could be getting hit. However, notice that he is slightly glowing blue in that shot. Well now that I think about it, Sonic and Shadow glow when they kick anyway, so... nevermind ugh. >_<

Oh yea right. :P Sonic games have always been in cities, but now with the new systems we can get a real sense of destruction and chaos, and *gasp* vast beauty in the city urban environments. XD Also what's with this game being compared to Sonic 1 all the time? The theory that this game was somehow supposed to mirror Sonic 1, wasn't that just meaningless fan speculation?

Also something this game has that Shadow doesn't: multiple colors!

Um.

What level in Sonic 1 is supposed to be a city? Spring Yard? Scrap Brain? Star Light? None of those looked anything like the city in that shot.

And I want to mirror what eggFL said about the idea of this being a remake of Sonic 1 being just fan speculation. Seriously, when did Yuji Naka say, explicitly, "This game will be a remake of Sonic 1"? As far as I remember, he said it was going to be a reinvention of the franchise, not of that one specific game. People just took what he said the wrong way and it's spiralled from there.

I think the point is more that a Sonic 1 remake - done well - would own, and hence we'd like to believe it.

"Urban setting" is stretching the originals though, I always thought of the mecha-cityesque levels more as Robotnik's base (especially Scrap Brain).  But hey, let's keep the dream alive a little longer, eh?

Sonic games have always been in cities,

*blink*

So Sonic 1... let's see... Starlight maybe? Scrap Brain is really more some kind of bizarre industrial... thing... with Eggman's base in it.

Sonic 2... Casino Night ok sure. Metropolis, despite the name, is no city. Genocide City Zone doesn't really exist.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles... er... nope? Carnival Night at a stretch.

So like the possible cities you get are elaborate and colourful and so very drastically not urban. You clearly are bizarre in the head if you possibly consider that urban setting in the screenshots to be anything like the Mega Drive games.

Also Rolko: Ya but like... never such a barrage of one kind of badnik... I mean iunno. Srsly.

Well maybe, nothing in the old games quite as obviously urban as in the new games and apparently in this game. But the signs were there. I just think this was on the path of Sonic's evolution. I think it's a matter of perspective. There is little really in the old games that defies the new, and vice versa. I like how Heroes closes the gap a little. I personally would like it to be closed a little more. But to me, Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure are two pages from the same book.

For the record: Spring Yard, Star Light, Scrap Brain, Chemical Plant, Casino Night, Metropolis, Carnival Night, Stardust Speedway

1. This is what SADX should've looked like. (Okay, maybe that's a little too good.)
2. Maybe they'll get true Sonic gameplay back. Sonic Heroes was like
"Super Smash Bros. Melee Adventure Featuring Sonic and a Worse Camera".
too much fighting and garbage puzzles, and no traditional stages to turn to (like in SA)...
3. (MOST IMPORTANT) I sure hope SEGA will do that betrayal plan* that seems so popular,
but do it in reverse for once (to be fair to Nintendo players).
If they don't, then they're deliberately trying to lose half their customers.
I'd rather pay $50 for a used Dreamcast just to play SA than $400+ for an XB360 or PS3
just to play this game (and possibly be a little disappointed like with SH).

*You know... give Nintendo a game to be made available only for GameCube
(and get the "ONLY FOR" triangle on the cover), wait a year or two, and then
release the same game for the other systems. Is it lying to say "only for GameCube"?
No, it's not. These new versions of the game are improved, so they aren't exactly the same.

I'd like to see this happen with the other systems for once.

That's one of about two places in the entire game where you have that many enemies in your face at once (the other one I'm thinking of is also in Starlight), and those aren't even really badniks.

And while the traffic cone and road barrier are certainly urban, that proves nothing because it still just flat-out looks nothing like the screenshots. Really, it's just the same sort of generic city setting that was used in Shadow.

What's wrong with a little combat? I enjoyed all of the extra fighting in SH, (Team Dark was by far, the most fun team to play as.) especially since one of my major complaints with Sonic games is weak or non-existant combat. Does anyone want to take bets on how bad the camera is, since we know that Sonic Team can never design a good camera. Here's the categories for prediction along with an example of a game in that category.
1. Blatently homicidal: (Sonic Adventure 2)
2. Bad: (Sonic Heroes)
3. Moderately incompetent (Shadow the Hedgehog)
4. Good: (3D Zelda games)
5. Great: (Kingdom Hearts 2)

Doesn't look like anything groundbreaking yet. I just see more of the same boost panels, more of the same scripted springs, and another token board sequence.

And an SA2-esque slide-kick, lol, sorry Rolk but looks like you were wrong about the rolling too. :B

And the "badniks"? I bet you anything you like they're going to be just like the GUN generic beetle robots, judging by the fact that there are also GUN-esque bipedal robots in others of those new shots.

I say this is going to suck after all if all these hunches are right. :( Way to fail at taking a new direction, Sonic Team.

Sonic doesn't have to be constantly quirky/cosmic/surreal all the time... Let it have cities every once in a while. Sometimes they are really slick. Besides, cities are generally fun. Plus Sonic has grew up a little since then. It should be well accepted by now that Sonic lives in cities, very realistic ones at that.

I was going to call on the fact that the screens so far indicated a much more colorful style than Shadow so far, but then I saw these new screen. Ok, wow!! That really does look straight out of Shadow the Hedgehog. In fact, one of the screens looked almost like a copy and paste from an area in Westopolis. Only thing is, Westopolis was kind of cool. And you know what's even cooler? Grinding on the side of a highway shaped like a halfpipe.

I could ask for more color in these screens. The city level has gone down a little in my view with these new screens. I liked Westopolis, but this is supposed to define the next generation of Sonic, and I still haven't seen any profoundly cool rich colorful Sonic style. It shoulda been more like Radical Highway. I wanna see more red and more Nights hotel.

What's wrong with a little combat? I enjoyed all of the extra fighting in SH, (Team Dark was by far, the most fun team to play as.) especially since one of my major complaints with Sonic games is weak or non-existant combat. 5. Great: (Kingdom Hearts 2)

I agree exactly about the combat. Like before, I would argue that Sonic games shouldn't need a combat aspect in the first place... But I think it's positive now. The instant benefit is having decent boss fights as opposed to Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Pretty darn good boss fights in fact. Shadow continued that trend. The side benefit is allowing stronger enemies, giving you more incentive to /avoid/ them whenever you can. Now that's hardcore. Anyway, the third benefit is that adding combat may actually make the gameplay more interesting where applicable, as simple as that.

Kudos for sneaking in an anti-SA2 opinion. Smooooth.

Oh, a Kingdom Hearts fan, huh? Also putting that above Zelda are we? Huh, man. My chat buds are KH fans. They would rip at me for liking Sonic games. Screw you all. :P

all high and mighty cause we play /real time/ rpgs are we.... >_>

I think they got the gameplay just about down in SA2. I'm looking for creative gratification. Graphics, story, etc. I'm /almost/ seeing it in the screens so far.

Sa2-esque slide kick: Actually SA2 I don't remember having the slide kick. That started in Heroes. Anyway, there's no clear shot of a slide kick in the screens. Only one that almost looks like rolling, and the other one kind of looks like a 360 degree sweep kick to me. Almost like those fighting game characters like Eddie and Christie from Tekken who dance while fighting. Anyway it could be like some kind of 360 degree attack, something like Tornado jump from Heroes or -something-.

Btw the bipedal robot in the screenshot of the ruins level, is standing next to a robot that's clearly designed by Dr. Eggman. Just saying....

I'm just saying this game isn't a remake of Sonic 1 like some people seem to be convinced it is.

2. Bad: (Sonic Heroes)
3. Moderately incompetent (Shadow the Hedgehog)
4. Good: (3D Zelda games)
5. Great: (Kingdom Hearts 2)
The fighting is slow, and it wastes time. It's also frustrating, partly because robots just don't
want to get hurt (yes, that's you, you stupid helmeted fatso who is still nearly impossible to hit even
after the helmet is knocked off, thanks to a combination of stupidity and bad hit detection),
and because the characters are especially hard to control while fighting.
Omega usually runs in the general direction of an enemy when he punches,
but he still manages to miss it most of the time. If there aren't any enemies, he runs toward the edge
of the platform and tries killing himself. There's usually an invisible wall stopping him,
but sometimes, he slides right off the platform and dies. Vector and Big don't do that,
but they have stiff, slow controls, and they manage to waste even more time.

I agree about the cameras, although I haven't played Shadow the Hedgehog or Kingdom Hearts 2.
Sonic Adventure 2's is evil, not just for being uncontrollable, but also for doing stupid things and
getting stuck behind walls (and then staying there until Sonic kills himself).
I'd call Sonic Adventure's something around "bad" or "very bad".
SADX's Free Camera would be "good" if it didn't change back to Auto (become disabled,
act like Auto while pretending to be Free, or change the menu to say Auto again)
every time Sonic went into a different room or loaded a new area.

eggFL, I didn't think SA's bosses were really great, but they still beat SH's.
In SH, the battles are all button-mashing (bird machines), button-mashing and randomness
(team battles), or fairly fun fights against dozens of robots (but those aren't even bosses).
StH and StH2 beat all the other games. It's really fun to hit Robotnik really quickly
(instead of waiting for a chance to attack) without having to mash the buttons.

Okay, I'm done with the off-topic stuff.

Oh, there's one more thing: I just noticed that I can't quote from the Topic Summary.
Did someone already mention this in another thread?
